Knowing the Act, being able to correctly evaluate a situation, and being aware of the consequences of one's actions – these are the basic prerequisites for the responsible handling of a firearm. These topics were also addressed at a professional lecture held on October 14, 2026, at the premises of the remand prison and prison in Košice.
The lecturer was the President of the District Court in Prešov, JUDr. Čech, who familiarized the prison officers with the legal aspects of possessing and using a firearm, especially in civilian life and outside the performance of official duties.
After an opening welcome by the prison director, the lecturer addressed the legal definition of a weapon and basic legal institutes, primarily necessary defense and extreme emergency. Using an understandable interpretation and practical examples, he explained under what circumstances the use of a weapon can be in accordance with the Act and what legal consequences an incorrect evaluation of a specific situation may have.
He paid special attention to situations from everyday life, including encounters with dangerous wild animals. He emphasized that every event must be assessed individually, taking into account its circumstances and legal conditions. The mere presence of a dangerous animal does not automatically entitle a person to use a firearm.
The lecture was enriched with specific examples from the long-term practice of JUDr. Čech, which helped those present better understand the application of legal principles in real situations. After each thematic section, the officers were given space for questions and discussion. The understandable interpretation, suitably chosen examples, and the lecturer's ability to approach legal issues from a practical point of view contributed to the fact that the individual topics were presented to the listeners clearly and engagingly.
The meeting reminded us that responsible handling of a firearm does not begin in a crisis situation, but primarily with knowledge of the Act, deliberation, and awareness of the possible consequences of one's own actions.
In the conclusion, the prison director thanked JUDr. Čech for his professional interpretation, valuable insights, and practical experience. The lecture was a beneficial expansion of the legal awareness of the officers and emphasized the importance of responsibility when handling a firearm in both official and civilian life.
