Acquiring new knowledge and skills can be the first step toward a better future. This is precisely why retraining courses at the Košice-Šaca Prison and Detention Center have their place. They offer inmates the opportunity to prepare for their return to normal life and increase their chances of employment in the labor market.
One such opportunity was the retraining course “Machinery course for the operation of selected construction machinery and equipment”, which took place at the institution from October 6 to 9, 2026. The training was provided by instructors from the company NOVA TRAINING s. r. o. based in Košice. The course was for participants fully funded by the national project Skills for the Labor Market, implemented by the Central Office of Labor, Social Affairs and Family.
Over the course of four days, participants learned about health and safety principles at work, operating rules for construction machinery, and the basics of their maintenance and inspection. They gained essential knowledge necessary for safe work in accordance with current regulations. The course did not require practical operation of machinery or a driver's license. Therefore, participants were able to focus on acquiring the necessary theoretical knowledge and mastering basic safe operation rules.
The course was successfully completed by 25 inmates, who received a certificate of completion for education and training in the operation of selected construction machinery and equipment. These include, for example, excavators, mini-excavators, backhoe loaders, or UNC-type machines.
The acquired qualification can help participants after release find employment in construction, maintenance, manufacturing, or technical services. New knowledge and the obtained certificate can thus be a significant step toward employment independence and successful integration into society. Each new skill opens up further possibilities. Retraining courses therefore represent an important part of preparing inmates for life after release. They help them develop skills, increase chances of getting a job, and build a stronger foundation for a fresh start.
