The Slovak Republic is expanding its capacities in the field of detention. On October 21, 2026, a new branch of the Hronovce Detention Facility was ceremonially opened in Kremnica. The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Justice Boris Susko and the Minister of Health Kamil Šaško.
The new facility with a capacity of 75 places is located on the premises of the Professor Matulay Psychiatric Hospital in Kremnica. It is intended for men, women, and juveniles for whom a court has ordered detention as a protective measure. It will provide specialized medical and psychiatric care in a safe environment that takes into account the need to protect society as well as ensuring professional care for the placed persons.
Together with the branch in Hronovce, the Slovak Republic will have a total of 150 places available for persons with court-ordered detention. The expansion of capacities represents a significant step in the development of the detention system and in ensuring conditions for the execution of court decisions.
76 prison officers, functionally assigned to the detention department of the Banská Bystrica - Kráľová prison, will also participate in ensuring the operation of the new branch. Their task will be to carry out activities related to ensuring the safety and guarding of the facility in close cooperation with the medical staff.
The presence of prison officers is an integral part of the functioning of the detention facility, which combines the provision of healthcare with the protection of society. Performing service in such an environment requires a high level of professionalism, responsibility, and strict adherence to security procedures, as well as close cooperation with the medical staff.
The Corps of Prison and Court Guard is thus expanding its scope to include the branch of the Hronovce Detention Facility in Kremnica. Through its presence in this facility, it will contribute to the protection of society and to creating safe conditions for providing the necessary professional care to persons for whom detention has been ordered by the court.
