On the occasion of World First Aid Day, which falls annually on the second Saturday of September, a professional lecture focused on providing first aid took place on September 14, 2026 at the Košice Institute for Detention and the Institute for Serving Prison Sentences.
The event was intended for incarcerated persons, and its goal was to acquaint them with the basic principles of providing proper and timely first aid in situations where a quick reaction can be crucial for saving a human life.
The lecture included not only a theoretical part but also practical demonstrations and practice of individual first aid procedures. Incarcerated persons had the opportunity to try out the Heimlich maneuver, used for choking on foreign objects, as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on prepared training manikins under professional supervision.
The practical section allowed participants to master the correct procedure for providing aid while simultaneously testing individual actions in model situations. Emphasis was placed primarily on correctly assessing the situation, calling for professional help, and subsequently providing first aid until its arrival.
The entire event took place under the guidance of a first aid instructor from the ZVJS occupational health service department, who explained and demonstrated the individual procedures to the participants and subsequently oversaw their practical performance.
Similar educational activities contribute to expanding the practical knowledge of incarcerated persons while also highlighting the importance of first aid in everyday life. The ability to react correctly and promptly in a critical situation can be decisive not only within the prison environment but also outside of it.
World First Aid Day was therefore not only an opportunity for acquiring new knowledge in the Košice institute, but also a practical demonstration that anyone can learn to provide help to another person.
