As part of the education and support of financial literacy for sentenced prisoners assigned to the exit unit, we visited the Bosák Bank exhibition in Prešov. The goal of the visit was to bring the importance of responsible financial management closer to the sentenced prisoners, but also to present the inspiring life story of a man who, despite humble beginnings, was able to succeed in the world.
During the tour, we learned about the life of Michal Bosák, a native of eastern Slovakia, who achieved success in the United States of America through his diligence, hard work, skill, and entrepreneurial spirit. The poor boy gradually became a successful banker and a prominent figure in Slovak-American social life.
Significant milestones in his life were two historical documents associated with his name. The first was his signature on a ten-dollar bill issued on June 25, 1907, which symbolizes his successful career in American banking. The second was his signature on the Pittsburgh Agreement of May 30, 1918, which was an important document in the history of Slovaks and Czechs.
The visit to the exhibition was not only an opportunity to get to know a significant personality of our history but also an incentive to reflect on the value of work, perseverance, responsibility, and proper decision-making. Michal Bosák's story shows that even despite unfavorable life conditions, it is possible to achieve significant goals through one's own effort and determination.
We believe that the acquired knowledge will contribute to the development of financial literacy of the sentenced prisoners and help them better prepare for responsible financial management after returning to society. Such activities also support personal development, motivation, and an awareness of the importance of an active approach to one's own future.
