The start of a new school year is always associated with new expectations, goals, but also the determination to acquire new knowledge, skills, and experiences. There was no exception for the start of the 2026/2027 school year at the dislocated workplace of the Secondary Vocational School of Food Industry in Nitra, which operates at the Nitra-Chrenová Prison.
The ceremonial opening of the school year was also attended by the directors of both institutions, Col. Ing. Borislav Kročko, Director of the Nitra-Chrenová Prison, as well as the Director of the Secondary Vocational School of Food Industry, PaedDr. Peter Stračár, together with school representatives and teachers. Their participation underscored the importance of cooperation between the prison and the school in providing vocational education to female inmates. In the introduction, the Director of the Nitra-Chrenová Prison, Col. Ing. Borislav Kročko, gave a speech in which he highlighted the importance of education as a key part of preparation for life after serving a sentence. He encouraged the female inmates to take advantage of the opportunity to gain new knowledge and practical skills and to perceive their studies as an opportunity to work on themselves and their future. Similar encouraging words were also offered to the present “future confectioners” by the school director, PaedDr. Peter Stračár, along with his deputy, Mgr. Katarína Vykoukalová, who guides the inmates during their vocational training.
After all, education is not just about getting a certificate or professional qualification. It is also about acquiring work habits, self-confidence, responsibility, and the ability to start a new life after release from prison. Professional education can help female inmates in finding employment and facilitate their reintegration into society.
Studying in the field of confectionery offers the opportunity to combine theoretical knowledge with practical preparation. During classes, inmates learn professional procedures, work with various ingredients and tools, and at the same time develop their creativity, precision, and responsibility.
The ceremonial opening of the school year at the Nitra-Chrenová Prison was an opportunity to remind everyone that education has its place even during imprisonment and can be a significant tool for positive change. Female inmates thus get the chance not only to gain a professional qualification in the field of confectionery but also a chance for future employment.
The presence of the prison management and school representatives during the opening ceremony was also a manifestation of support and belief in the value of educating inmates. The common goal is to create conditions that will allow them to prepare for their return to society and increase their chances of decent employment after completing their sentence.
