How to recognize that a relationship is no longer just about arguments, but about violence? Where to turn when a person needs help? And what to do if children are also at risk? These were some of the questions discussed by remand prisoners and sentenced prisoners in the Ilava prison with experts from the Intervention Center – Safe Women's Home Trenčín.
The meeting was organized by a social worker from the unit for remand detention, and its topic was domestic and gender-based violence. The experts explained to the women what forms violence can take, how to notice warning signs, and what protection and help options exist.
However, it did not end with just a lecture. The women actively participated in the discussion and asked about specific situations they might encounter. They were interested in how to proceed in seeking help, how to protect themselves and their children, or which organizations and institutions they can turn to after their release.
The topic sparked both interest and emotion. For some of the participating women, this information might have been particularly relatable, as the experience of violence may be part of their own life story. That is why it is important for them to know that help exists and where they can find it.
Such meetings have their place in the prison environment. They bring women not only new information but also practical advice that they can use after returning to everyday life. Sometimes, simply knowing the options for help can be the first step toward a person being able to decide on a safer future.
