The European Judo Masters Championships were held in the Portuguese city of Portimão from October 22 to 25, 2026, where competitors from 33 countries met. An extraordinary success at this prestigious championship was achieved by a prison officer of the Corps of Prison and Court Guard from the remand prison and prison Nitra, Major Mgr. Richard Minarovič, who won the title of European Champion and a gold medal.
Richard competed in the age category of 30 to 44 years and in the weight category of under 100 kg. In strong international competition consisting of 23 representatives of European countries in his category, he demonstrated excellent athletic performance. On the way to the coveted title, he gradually defeated representatives of Spain, Sweden, and France, thereby securing his place in the final. In the decisive match, he faced another Spanish representative, whom he defeated and deservedly stepped onto the highest podium as the Slovak national anthem played in honor of our representative. It was a moment of pride, emotion, and well-deserved reward for years of perseverance, discipline, and sports determination.
With his success, Major Mgr. Richard Minarovič worthily represented not only the Slovak Republic but also the Corps of Prison and Court Guard, confirming that determination and tenacity bring exceptional results even beyond the scope of his official duties.
We warmly congratulate him on the European Champion title and wish him many more successes.
