The premises of the Prison Hospital and Trenčín Prison have once again been filled with the tones of music. Prisoners prepared a musical performance for their fellow prisoners, which this time was dedicated exclusively to well-known Slovak popular songs.
The musical group operates within the Biblical School club and regularly accompanies holy masses in prison with their singing and music. This time, however, the members of the prison band prepared a program of a different nature. The repertoire consisted of covers of songs by famous Slovak artists and groups, including songs by the band IMT Smile, tracks by Richard Müller, and other artists of Slovak popular music. The prisoners selected the individual songs in advance, practiced them, and specifically arranged them for their musical line-up. The preparation required regular rehearsals, mutual coordination, and the gradual fine-tuning of each song. The result was a program based on melodies that are well-known to listeners from everyday life outside the prison.
It was precisely these well-known Slovak songs that brought a more relaxed atmosphere to the concert and gave those present a space to rest from the daily stereotype of serving their sentences. For the band members, the performance also represented an opportunity to present their musical skills and the result of the work to which they dedicated time during preparation. The musical activity of the prison band continues. Its members are already working on practicing further songs so that they can gradually expand their repertoire and perform on other occasions, for example, in the form of a Christmas concert.
This performance also showed that music can be, under the conditions of imprisonment, not only a form of meaningful leisure time but also a space for creativity, cooperation, and the development of one's own abilities.
