ZVJS commemorated the 82nd anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica

Banská Bystrica became once again this year a place where history met the present. The national celebrations of the 82nd anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) were commemorated by representatives of the state, armed and security forces, local government, and the general public. The commemorative events were dedicated to the memory of all those who stood up against the Nazi regime 82 years ago and fought for freedom and democracy. The Prison and Judicial Guard Corps (ZVJS) was not only a participant in the celebrations but also an active part of them.

The ZVJS presentation stand during the celebrations brought the public closer to work that usually remains hidden behind the walls of institutions. Visitors could learn about the mission and activities of the corps, view a collection of prohibited items seized during custody and imprisonment, or see a mock-up of a cell with figures in prison clothing. The paintings created by inmates, which highlighted the importance of pedagogical guidance by officers in directing creativity and self-realization, also attracted attention. Part of the presentation included equipment and armament of the officers, including non-lethal weapons. A major attraction for both children and adults were the cynological demonstrations, during which service dogs and their handlers showcased their readiness, obedience, and skills. The participation of ZVJS in the celebrations thus offered the public a view of a service that is built on professionalism, readiness, responsibility, and daily work for the safety of society.

The Slovak National Uprising reminds us every year of the courage of people who were willing to stand up for the values of freedom and democracy. Even today, their message remains relevant. Freedom, peace, and security are not a matter of course. They are values that must be cared for and that require a responsible approach from each of us.

Members of the Prison and Judicial Guard Corps contribute to their protection through their daily service. That is why it was important to be in Banská Bystrica on August 29th – not only to commemorate history but also to show the public the people, equipment, training, and work that make up ZVJS today.
