We had the opportunity to introduce the national project “Skills for the Labor Market” to inmates in the Sabinov detention and prison facility of the Prešov Institute for Execution of Custody and Prison Sentence as early as last year. It was one of the first projects of its kind, intended for the unemployed, as well as for the employed, with the goal of finding work through retraining.
Thanks to another phase of this project and the invaluable assistance from the Prešov Labor Office, specifically Mgr. Z. Estočková, head of the counseling and education department, and employee Mgr. E. Gállová during the demanding administration of inmates' applications for financial contributions to support the retraining of job seekers, another group of inmates had the opportunity to attend a retraining course between July 6, 2026, and July 9, 2026, focused on operating a hand-held motor chainsaw - chainsaw operator course for other activities.
The interest in this type of retraining course among the inmates was truly high. Out of a total of over 40 interested parties, 11 inmates ultimately met the strict criteria for receiving a contribution to support education. The implementation of the course was carried out by the company NOVA TRAINING, whose priority is quality education with an individual approach. This is an educational company with a 25-year tradition in the field of retraining and professional courses. Under the guidance of experienced instructor Ing. Ján Kalanin, the inmates were introduced to relevant legislation, occupational health and safety laws, government regulations for working with chainsaws, and the basics of first aid. Subsequently, they focused on work procedures for maintenance and inspection of chainsaws, practical operation of chainsaws, and permitted and prohibited handling of chainsaws.
After successfully completing the course, the participants were awarded a certificate of professional competence for operating a hand-held chainsaw for other activities, which will expand their options when seeking employment after release from prison and help them find legal work.
