Values hidden in culture and traditions

Preparing for a return to everyday life means more than just fulfilling duties behind prison walls. An important part of this preparation includes experiences that force a person to reflect, discover new values, and look at the world from a different perspective.

Convicts assigned to the exit ward as part of a program aimed at reintegration into society completed a cultural and educational activity outside the Banská Bystrica facility. Their destination was the State Scientific Library, where they had the opportunity to see a photography exhibition “Father and Son” by the acclaimed Bulgarian photographer Valeriy Poshtarov.

The photographs told emotional stories on the themes of family connections, intergenerational influences, and the fragility of male emotions. The library visit continued with other interesting exhibitions. In the puppetry salon, the convicts learned about the rich history of Slovak puppetry. The second exhibition presented traditional folk musical instruments that shaped the Slovak musical tradition, with an emphasis on the fujara, which has become a symbol of Slovak cultural heritage.

It is precisely such activities that remind us of the values that connect people across generations, develop the ability to perceive the world more sensitively, and show that the path to change can begin with knowledge, reflection, and new experiences.
