On Saturday, four convicts met with their families at the Dubnica nad Váhom Leisure Center. However, this time it was not under standard conditions, but in an environment that more closely resembled an ordinary family day.
The meeting took place as part of the "Family Day" activity, which is part of the placement in the exit department under the "Chance to Return 2" project. Its goal is to create a space for maintaining and strengthening family relationships, even during a period when contact with loved ones is significantly restricted.
The convicts prepared for the visit in advance. They prepared refreshments for their loved ones and small rewards for the children. Then came the most important part – being together. Part of the day was spent in the center's premises, while the rest took place outside in the yard. The children could ride ponies, observe animals, play, and do sports with their parents. There was no shortage of laughter, conversations, or moments where, quite simply, there was no need to explain anything.
After a certain time, each of the participants had the opportunity to meet their family in an informal and civilian setting. The atmosphere was relaxed, friendly, and above all, family-oriented. For a moment, it was possible to set aside the everyday reality of serving a sentence and focus on relationships that remain important even despite the separation.
Convicts realize every day that they miss their families. However, such a meeting can remind them of everything one can gain upon returning – and for whom it makes sense to work on oneself. Sometimes all it takes is a few hours together, a child's smile, a simple game, or a chat over refreshments, for a person to see again where they want to direct their life and what is worth investing their energy into.
