The cultural room of the Ilava correctional facility was briefly transported to the Chernobyl zone. Through a lecture by Andrej Pastorek, the inmates heard authentic stories about life in an area forever marked by the nuclear disaster.
Andrej Pastorek is one of those people who has been dedicated to Chernobyl for a long time. Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, he regularly returns to the area, documenting its present day and helping local residents. During the lecture, he presented photographs of places reclaimed by nature, as well as villages where the original inhabitants still live to this day. The atmosphere was enhanced by a demonstration of technical equipment used when moving through the contaminated environment.
His personal travel experiences, stories about charitable aid, and the narratives of people who decided to stay in their homes despite the difficult conditions also sparked great interest.
The event was part of the facility's resocialization activities. It offered participants an unconventional look at the consequences of one of the greatest industrial disasters in history, while also providing space to reflect on the value of home, human courage, and solidarity.
