Three inmates from the Dubnica prison traded barred windows for the views from the crown of the Považie region. As part of a sanctioned leave from the institution and accompanied by officers, they went hiking to the iconic Vršatec cliffs. The demanding, 16-kilometer-long trek across the limestone massif of the White Carpathians had a clear goal – to spend free time meaningfully, clear their heads, and take another step toward a successful return to freedom.
For the three men, this was a unique chance to briefly leave the stereotype of prison walls behind. Being in nature provided not only well-deserved rest but also informal discussions and the strengthening of mutual trust. Their reward for the completed kilometers was a breathtaking panoramic view, which allowed them to see the entire central Považie region literally in the palm of their hand.
Activities like these are a great way to diversify a prison sentence. They help inmates practice discipline, responsibility, and independence outside the strict regime of the institution. The entire trip took place in a calm atmosphere, and the inmates returned to the prison full of new experiences and with a clear head, which serves as excellent motivation for the days ahead.
