At the Hospital for Accused and Convicted Persons and the Institute for Execution of Prison Sentences in Trenčín, inmates engage in aquaristics as part of their leisure activities. The aquaristics club represents one of the opportunities for meaningful use of free time, while simultaneously supporting the development of responsibility, patience, and practical skills in the field of keeping aquarium animals.
The activity of the aquaristics club began with one 100-liter aquarium. The basic equipment, including the aquarium, gravel, plants, and the first fish kept, was provided by the institution's staff. Over the years, thanks to the interest of the inmates and the support from the institution, the club has gradually expanded and currently has seven aquariums. A wide spectrum of exotic freshwater fish is kept within the aquaristics club. Among the most interesting species are oscars, blue acaras, angelfish, various types of livebearers, corydoras, plecostomus, and pearl cichlids. A significant success for the club members was the first successful breeding of the pearl cichlid, which is the result of regular care, gained experience, and a responsible approach to breeding. The institution supports the activities of the aquaristics club and creates conditions for its further development. Among the exceptionally interesting animals kept as part of the aquaristics activity are axolotls, which, with their unusual appearance and biological properties, are among the most attractive species kept.
The aquaristics club enjoys great popularity among the inmates. Its members exchange self-bred fish between individual sections under the supervision of officers, thereby sharing experiences and promoting interest in keeping aquarium animals. Keeping aquarium animals represents not only a hobby for the inmates but also an opportunity to develop positive work habits, responsibility, and systematic care for living organisms during their prison sentence.
